Solo Exhibition. March 20 - May 4, 2025 @ Te Atamira
“Alta” is a contemplative exploration of memory, place, and change, shaped by my daily routine and the shifting social and environmental landscape of Queenstown. Over eight years, I captured some 800 photographs of solitary basketball hoop in my local park—its minimal geometric form juxtaposed against the dramatic Remarkables mountain range. To me, the hoop became more than a structure; it felt anthropomorphic, a silent sentinel witnessing the profound changes in my own life over the past decade and the evolving culture of Queenstown, increasingly shaped by the commercialisation of the landscape.
Through this installation, I want viewers to navigate a forest of jumbled, disorienting images, mirroring the confusion and isolation that memory and change often evoke. At its heart lies the original hoop, now a totem of reflection and shared experience. While the tone is contemplative and solemn, there’s also a quiet humour in knowing that this journey ultimately revolves around something as simple as a basketball hoop.
